Event with Susan Meissner
On Thursday, March 23 at 6 pm, Laguna Beach Books is pleased to welcome author Susan Meissner. Susan will be discussing her new book, A Bridge Across the Ocean.
Every year thousands of people visit the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, California where the docked ship serves as a museum and floating hotel. Originally one of Cunard’s fabled luxury ocean liners, the Queen Mary also played an important — and little known — role in the history of World War II.
Beginning in February 1946, the Queen Mary made 13 voyages, carrying 20,000 war brides across the Atlantic to their American husbands. Eighteen-year-old June Allen and her baby boy boarded the first of those trips to be reunited with June’s husband, Arnie Boots, a U.S. Army MP she met in England during the war.
Inspired by the war bride voyages and June Allen’s memories of her own journey, Susan Meissner wrote A Bridge Across the Ocean, a compelling and heartfelt novel that follows the lives of three women — past and present — connected by a seventy-year-old tragedy that took place aboard the Queen Mary. Shifting between the war years in Europe, the 1946 voyage, and present day California, A Bridge Across the Ocean is told from the alternating perspectives of Annaliese Lange and Simone Deveraux.
In the aftermath of WWII, Annaliese and Simone join hundreds of other European war brides aboard the Queen Mary. Both have suffered greatly during the war: Annaliese is a German desperate to escape her abusive Nazi husband, and Simone is the only surviving child of a French Resistance spy. Their stories converge when they meet in line to board the ship. Both are desperate to leave the war behind and start over. As the women sail toward their new lives in America, tightly-held secrets are revealed in their shared cabin. When the ship docks in New York Harbor, only one of them will live out her American dream.
Sure to resonate with fans of Orphan Train, Sarah’s Key, and The Nightingale, Meissner’s novel shines light on a remarkable, forgotten chapter in history.
